How to send a fax from your phone or computer

A fax is a document sent over a phone line to another fax machine. Plenty of doctors’ offices, courts, banks and landlords still ask for one, but you no longer need a machine of your own to send it.

Step by step

  1. Open the website. Go to faxanything.com on your phone or computer. There is nothing to install.
  2. Enter the fax number. Type the US or Canadian number, with the area code, exactly as the recipient gave it to you.
  3. Add your document. Choose a PDF, take a photo of the paper, or type a letter. A fax can be up to 25 pages.
  4. Add your name and email. Your name is printed at the top of each page, and your email gets the delivery confirmation.
  5. Confirm and send. Check the preview, then send. You only pay if the fax is delivered.

The three ways to send a fax

  • An online fax service, like this one. You upload a document and type the number. It works from any phone or computer and needs no phone line.
  • A fax machine, or a printer with a fax function, plugged into a phone line. You feed the paper in and dial. Some internet phone lines do not carry faxes reliably.
  • Ask the recipient whether they accept email or a secure upload instead. Many offices do, and it can save you the fax altogether.

Before you send

  • Ask for the fax number, not the office’s main phone number. They are usually different.
  • Include a cover page if the fax is going to a busy office. It tells them who it is for and how many pages to expect.
  • Keep the confirmation email. It records when the receiving machine confirmed the fax.

Do I need a phone line?

Not with an online service. We send the fax for you over the phone network. You only need a phone or computer with a web browser.

How do I know the fax arrived?

You get an email when the receiving machine confirms it. It lists the number, the page count and the time. It does not include your document.

What if the line is busy?

We try again, up to three times, five minutes apart. If it still cannot go through you get an email saying so, and you are not charged.
