How Fax Anything works

Fax Anything sends a fax for you, over the phone network, to a US or Canadian fax number. You do not need a fax machine, a phone line or an app.

What a fax is for

A fax sends a document as printed pages to another fax machine. Many offices still use them, such as clinics, law firms, courts, banks and landlords, often because their forms or procedures ask for one.

What you need

  • A phone, tablet or computer with a web browser.
  • The fax number, with the area code. It must be in the United States or Canada.
  • Your document: a PDF, a photo of the pages, or a letter you type. Up to 25 pages and 20 MB.
  • Your name and an email address.

How sending works

  1. Enter the fax number. Type the US or Canadian number you want to reach. We check it as you type.
  2. Add your document. Choose a PDF, take a photo of the paper, or type a letter. You see exactly what will be sent.
  3. Check and confirm. Add your name and email, tick the consent box, and confirm. Your name is printed at the top of every page.
  4. Get proof of delivery. When the receiving machine confirms the fax, we email you the number, the page count and the time.

How you know it arrived

When the receiving fax machine confirms the fax, we email you a delivery report: the number it went to, the number of pages, the date and time, and the status. The email never contains the document itself. A delivery report shows that the machine received the pages. It cannot show who picked them up.

If a fax cannot be delivered

If the line is busy or nobody answers, we try again, up to three times, five minutes apart. If it still cannot go through, we email you to say why.

What happens to your document

Documents are stored encrypted and are deleted within 24 hours of the fax’s final status, whether it was delivered or not. We keep a record that a fax was sent (the number, the page count, the status and the time) for 12 months, so we can answer questions and settle disputes. We do not keep what was in the document. The privacy policy and the health data privacy policy explain this in full.

Your name on every page

US rules require a fax to show who sent it. Every page carries a line at the top with your name, the number it was sent from, and the date and time. That number cannot receive replies, so the cover page can show your own email or phone number instead.

Who it is for

Anyone who needs to send a document to a US or Canadian fax number. It is not for unsolicited advertising, and organizations that are covered by the US HIPAA rules should not use it yet. Read the acceptable use policy for the details.

Using it with an AI assistant

Some AI assistants can prepare a fax from a conversation. Faxes are tied to your Fax Anything account, and an assistant can only send one when your account has a fax available. When it has none, the assistant tells you so.
