How to fax from an iPhone

You do not need a fax machine or a fax app to fax from an iPhone. You need your document as a PDF or a photo, and a website that sends faxes.

Step by step

  1. Get the document onto your iPhone. For paper, open the Files app, tap the More button, choose Scan Documents, scan each page and tap Save. Or take a clear photo of each page. If it is already a PDF, find it in Files or Mail.
  2. Open faxanything.com in Safari. There is nothing to download or install.
  3. Enter the fax number. Type the US or Canadian number, with the area code.
  4. Choose your document. Tap Choose a file or photo, then pick the scan, photo or PDF. Tap Take a photo to use the camera instead.
  5. Add your name and email, then send. Check the preview of every page, then send. You get an email when it is delivered.

If a photo is rejected

Some iPhone photos are saved in a format called HEIC, which fax services cannot read. If you see a message about HEIC, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPEG. You can also scan the page with the Files app, which makes a PDF.

Getting a good scan

  • Put the page on a flat, dark surface with good light and no shadow from your phone.
  • Fill the frame with the page and keep the text level.
  • Check the preview. If you can read it on screen, the recipient can read it on paper.
